Show Launch 2019

All set for Lurgan Show 2019 with Main Sponsors ABP Food Group & Translink and new Silverware Up for Grabs!

 

Lurgan & District Horse & Cattle Show Society Ltd will be hosting the annual Show on Saturday 1st June 2019.

The countdown is now well underway to the County Championship event which is one of the first shows in the Northern Ireland summer agricultural show calendar.

The Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council recently hosted a Sponsors reception and Show Launch evening held in Craigavon Civic & Conference Centre.

Lurgan Show are pleased to have a number of new and key sponsors supporting this year’s event which includes ABP Food Group, Lurgan; Translink and Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council and Fane Valley.

Guest speakers at the event were Liam McCarthy of ABP Food Group, Edward Jackson of Translink and Lord Mayor Cllr Julie Flaherty.

The Family of the Late David Riley, a show stalwart, also were in attendance at the show launch and presented a specially engraved silver cup to the Cattle Section.

Prize Schedules are now available for the 2019 Show and can be obtained at lurganshow.co.uk.

 

 

CHARITIES

Lurgan Show will also be supporting two nominated charities during the 2019 show, these including Kidney Care UK and Action Cancer.

 

PET SHOW

With around 15 classes, the Pet Show attracts at least 100 pets each year. Lurgan Show are pleased to have key sponsor Lurgan Veterinary Clinic supporting the Pet Show.

SCHOOLS

The school section is a very important element of the Lurgan Show; with around 3,500 exhibits annually between Schools and Home Industries sections. This section includes Hand Writing, Paper Craft, Miniature Gardens, Creative Craft, Cookery, Pottery and Photography. Entries in this section close on 13th May. Exhibits will be on view on show day in King’s Park School and accessed from within the Showgrounds.

 

HOME INDUSTRIES

The Home Industries classes also attract a great display of arts and crafts, photography, cookery, home produce including preserves as well as floral arrangements, eggs and honey.

The Show is indebted to the many sponsors of this section of the show. Around 23 cups and special prizes are up for grabs across both sections.  Lurgan Show gratefully acknowledges the support of sponsors which includes A Touch of Pink, Ballydougan Pottery, Craigavon Office Supplies, High Street Harvest, McKerr Home & Garden, Moutray’s Costcutter, Pins & Needles, Prestige Pictures, Tesco, The Cotton Shed and the Yarn Barn.

POULTRY

VINTAGE SHOW

The Vintage section is a real attraction for both young and old to see the tractors and other machinery which served past generations on the land. Vehicles can simply arrive on show day and must enter the showgrounds via Windsor Avenue entrance. All exhibitors receive a specially produced ceramic mug. Entry fee is only £5.

CATTLE

 

This year the society has been presented with a new cup by the Riley Family of Portadown in memory of the Late David Riley, a show stalwart and former Show Secretary and Vice President- the David Riley Memorial Cup for the Champion Beef Animal in Show.

 

A high entry of animals is expected in the pedigree breeds Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, Blondes, British Blues, Simmental, Limousin, Beef Shorthorn and Charolais sections with a number of judges travelling from the Republic of Ireland.  Correction to Prize Schedule: The judge of the Charolais and the Simmental classes is Joe Wilson, whilst the judge of the Limousin and Blonde classes is Rodney Arbuckle.

Lurgan Show is a qualifying show for the Limousin Show Team of the Year, Limousin Show Champion of the Year and the Gordon Bull. Meanwhile, the Blonde Cattle Club members will be able to compete in the Bank of Ireland Calf Championship and the Show Herd of the Year Qualifier. The Blonde Club will also be hosting Young Handler Competition and the Oddball Engineering Champion of Champions qualifier. Lurgan Show will also host the Bank of Ireland/ NISA Pedigree Junior Bull Championships. 102 Classes are available in the Cattle Section across many different breeds.

 

DAIRY CLASSSES & CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lurgan Show hosts Dairy classes for Shorthorns, Ayrshires, Holstein’s and Jersey breeds. The 2019 judge is to be Mr Seamus Gunn with five cups up for grabs across four breeds.

The Thompsons/ NISA Dairy Cow Championship 2019 will also feature as a qualifier alongside the Linden Foods/ NISA Pedigree Beef Heifer Championships.

 

YOUNG HANDLERS

Young exhibitors are encouraged to get into the ring to show off their skills, with two classes in dairy, beef and sheep. Young people are the future of shows and Lurgan Show wishes to encourage young  persons to become involved in handling and showing. Junior Handling Classes in the Cattle section are kindly sponsored by Woodside Farm.

 

 

SHEEP CLASSES & CHAMPIONSHIPS

For 2019, the Show Society are pleased to have ABP Food Group, Lurgan continue to sponsor the sheep classes in addition to a number of other key sponsors; Clubworld Travel, Lurgan, Freeburn Farm Feeds, R J Lyness Feeds, Natural Nutrition Ltd, South Down Feeds, Farmline Agricultural Supplies, Dromara; First Trust Bank, NFU Mutual, Portadown, Lurgan Veterinary Clinic and L A Richardson & Son Butchers, the NI Texel Breeders Club and Rooney Fine Foods Ltd, Dromore.

Exhibitors competing in 101 classes will also have excellent opportunities with Qualifiers for many different breeds.

Lurgan Show are pleased to welcome a new breed to the forthcoming show, with 8 classes provided for the Berrichon breed and to be judged by Michael McHugh.

In addition, classes will again be held for the Blue Texel with judge Mr Austin Shaw confirmed to attend. Judges will be travelling from across Ireland. The Charollais Sheep Society will be presenting a special rosette to overall Charolais Champion; whilst the Rouge de L’Quest have Lurgan Show as a selected show for the qualifier for Rouge Show Flock of the Year competition. A number of other qualifier will also be held which includes the Danske Bank/ NISA Sheep Championship and the Cydectin Young Handler Sheep Qualifier. Young Handlers are also especially encouraged to exhibit with the Lurgan Veterinary Cup up for grabs.

GOAT SECTION

The popular goat section will be judged this year by renowned judge Lindsay Greer from Ballyclare, with 12 classes for many different breeds. Mrs M Bloomer MBE has kindly provided £100 sponsorship. For details contact: John- 07855007746

 

 

 

PYGMY GOAT SECTION

This section once again is set to prove popular with over 50 exhibits in 2018, the judge this year being Ms Tracey Cater from Warwickshire. For further details contact: John- 07855007746. The Northern Ireland Pygmy Goat Club have kindly supported the £100 prize fund for Champion & Reserve Champions.

 

EQUESTRIAN SECTION

Lurgan Show continues to attract increasing numbers of horses with classes for miniature ponies, shetland ponies, Connemara’s, working hunter, racehorse to riding horse, show ponies and numerous others.

A number of new classes have also been added to the Equestrian section for 2019 and sponsored by D Foster Equestrian Supplies & Livery and these include: Supreme Horse Championship; Supreme In-Hand Pony Championship and Supreme Ridden Pony Championship.

Lurgan Show also offer qualifiers in this section and for 2019 The ‘Mrs Candy Supreme Ridden Show Horse Championship; The Plevin Family Supreme Ridden Mountain and Moorland Championship; The Bryony Gribben Supreme Mini Pony Championship; The Vale Farms Ltd Supreme Ridden Pony Championship and the Dutch Dame Supreme Intermediate Championship. In addition the Welsh Pony & Cob Society will be presenting Bronze medals to the Champion in A, B and Part breed championships.  Equestrian Secretary Mrs Ros Ewing will be endeavouring to do all to ensure that a great display of classes will be running all day.

The Show Society are pleased to be able to offer Pony jumping classes, organised and supported by the Killultagh Pony Club. These classes will be hosted on the hill overlooking the magnificent Lake and rolling showgrounds below.

DONKEYS/ DRIVING CLASSES

Donkey and Driving Classes will once again return to the Lawn adjacent to the Jubilee Fountain and accessed via the Windsor Avenue entrance to the Showgrounds which is from the Town Centre. The Donkey section commences judging at 10am and will be overseen by Jill Castles. Three perpetual silverware cups are on offer in this section.

The Driving section will commence judging at 1pm, with the Supreme Champion to receive the Cecil Bunting Memorial Cup. All enquiries should be to Margaret- 028 92665893

BUILD A SCARECROW COMPETITION

The Show Society welcome entries from families, groups or individuals to build a free standing scarecrow not higher than 150cm or five feet. All scarecrows must be delivered to Home Industries section on Friday 31st May.

LURGAN SHOW 2016 Launched at Palace

ORGANISERS of the Lurgan Show launched their forthcoming 104th year show last week.
The launch event, held for the first time at the historic Palace, Armagh was kindly hosted by the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council, Councillor Darren Causby.
Proceedings commenced with a warm welcome by Show Secretary Michele Doran to the dozens of volunteer committee members, sponsors and elected representatives, all who contribute, year on year, to ensure the show’s success.
Guest Speaker for the evening was Mr John Henning, Head of Agricultural Relations, Danske Bank.
Mr Henning delivered a meaningful address to the assembled guests, whilst praising the efforts of all involved in preparing for another county show event.
The launch was also the perfect platform upon which it was announced that the Lurgan Show will this year again be supporting two charities- the Southern Area Hospice and Meningitis Research.
Representatives from both charities were in attendance and spoke at the show launch.
Show Chairman, Winston Humphries, in delivering his address, welcomed a number of new committee members who have recently joined the Society. He also expressed his thanks to the generosity of the wider farming community and businesses who support the show.
Show organisers are pleased to announce a number of new attractions are being held at Lurgan this year in conjunction with the local council.
June is the Northern Ireland Good Food month of Dairy and with this, a range of cookery and food taster demonstrations will be showcased.
In addition, an expanded rural skills village will be displaying a varied range of traditional skills and crafts.

EQUESTRIAN
Lurgan Show being held this year on Saturday 4th June will commence with Equestrian events at approximately 8am. The horse arenas will host many major qualifiers for SHB, Ponies (UK), Equifest, Irish Shows Association and The North of England Show.
Pennie Bunting, Horse Secretary will be endeavouring to do all to ensure that a great display of classes will be running all day. Lurgan also host classes for Clydesdales, Miniature Horses, Donkeys and many more.
The Show Society are pleased to announce that for the first time in Northern Ireland as a non-area show, Lurgan will this year be awarding Welsh Pony & Cob Society Bronze Medals within the Welsh In-Hand Section.
The Equestrian schedule is now available and all entries, with the exception of the Donkey classes, must be with equestrian secretary on or before before Saturday 21st May.

CATTLE
The cattle section will offer some 101 classes in 2016. Judges will be travelling from across the British Isles. A new Cup, presented to the Show Society at the launch, was kindly presented by the Savage Family, Clogher, Donacloney in memory of the Late George Savage, a faithful supporter of Lurgan Show. The Challenge Cup will be offered to the Champion in the Rare/ Traditional/ Minority breed in show.
Classes will also once again be offered for the British Blue breed, with judge Ian McFadden, Castledawson. Once Again, many qualifiers are on offer including the Minsups Charolais Championship, the McLarnons Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship, the Linden Foods/NISA Pedigree Beef Heifer Championship, the Bank of Ireland Blonde Calf Championship, the Bank of Ireland/NISA Junior Bull Championship and a points show for the British Simmental Competition. The Northern Ireland Holstein Breeders Club will be offering an award for the Champion Female pedigree Holstein, whilst the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association will present rosettes for the Champions of the show. In addition, a number of sponsors will be supporting the prize fund including McLarnon Feeds, Genus, Kilco Dairy Hygiene and Woodside Farm.

SHEEP
Running alongside the Cattle Lawn on show day, there will be the ever expanding sheep section. Lurgan will this year host the largest number of sheep classes held to-date for potential exhibitors. 105 classes are on offer with qualifiers for the Danske Bank/NISA Sheep Championship, The Clogher Valley Cydection Young Handlers Qualifier and the NI Continental Sheep final qualifier.

GOATS
Show representatives are pleased to announce that classes have also increased in this section, with 18 Classes now available to a broad range of goat breeds.
Lurgan Show Society are delighted to now be working in co-operation with the NI Pygmy Goat Club, after hosting pygmy classes independently at the show for the past number of years. A generous prize fund is available to both Champion and Reserve Champion with Mr Stephen Cherry, Templepatrick, judge for the event.

VINTAGE
All types of vintage, classic and customised vehicles are welcome to Lurgan Show. Registration can occur on arrival at the showgrounds, this via the Windsor Avenue entrance, accessible from the Town Centre. Admission fee for vehicles is only £5 which includes access to the show and a specially commissioned Lurgan Show Mug.

HOME INDUSTRIES/ SCHOOLS SECTION
The Home Industries section will showcase a vast array of incredible talent. Ranging from Floral Art, painting, miniature gardens, baking, sewing, and photography, the 3000 plus exhibits will be what is on offer in Kings Park Primary School, located adjacent and accessible from the showgrounds. Entries for this section close on 5th May.

SECTION VACANCY

Lurgan Show Society wishes to appoint a
Home Industries Section co-ordinator.

The person appointed will act as Secretary to the Home Industries Section.
The person will also be responsible for the administration for this section and reporting directly to the overall Show Committee.
An honorarium is paid.
The person appointed will need to:
Be able to work on their own initiative and have a flexible approach
Be computer literate, including emails and preferably excel
Deal effectively with telephone queries and be a good communicator
Be able to work to and meet deadlines
Ideally have an interest in or knowledge of arts and crafts & local schools
The workload is unevenly distributed throughout the year and is busier closer to show date.
The job entails carrying out the following type of tasks:
Attending meetings
Following up action points from meetings
Working with the Committee in preparation for the annual show.
Preparing and distributing the Home Industries Show schedule in conjunction with the Home Industries committee.
Together with the other Secretaries, taking Section show entries.
Order and prepare rosettes and prize cards for show day
Ensure judging books are prepared for show day and collate the results for the press
Deal with the return of trophies from the previous year
Liaise with the Treasurer to collect sponsorship
Send out tickets/ exhibitor/ judges information before the show
Liase with local schools/ presentation of schools awards after Show day.

Election of Officers 2013

Lurgan & District Horse & Cattle Show Society committee recently held a very successful family BBQ and social evening at Bleary Farmers Hall to round off a very successful show year.

The event was attended by a large gathering of Show Officials, office bearers, members and helpers along with family and friends.

It was a great opportunity to engage with each other and reflect upon the year past. This event also rounded off the 2013 show year and prior to the forthcoming AGM and commencement of another nine months of planning working towards the 2014 show.

The Committee are always keen to keep expanding the show and open for new ideas and suggestions.

However, to progress and develop the annual event, more volunteers are required. If you believe you can offer any help or assistance, no matter how small, it would be greatly appreciated.
